Blood Sugar Imbalances

MD Cause:  Unknown

MD Rx: Insulin, Metformin, and other drugs that manipulate how sugar is metabolized, but which fail to cure the condition.

ND Cause: There is an interesting theory that has been floating around naturopathic circles for decades regarding type I diabetes. It has never been proven, but I will mention it here nonetheless. With type I diabetes, the organ which is responsible for producing insulin (the pancreas), no longer produces insulin. This is because a particular part of the pancreas called the "Beta Cells" has been destroyed. No more Beta Cells equals no more insulin. The naturopathic theory postulates that the body destroys the beta cells because it has developed an allergy to cow’s-milk protein. Somehow the signals get crossed and either because of the similarity in molecular structure between the beta cells and the milk protein, (or for other reasons yet to be determined) in addition to attacking the milk protein the immune system also attacks the beta cells of the pancreas. Now remember - this is a theory and has never been proven. Nonetheless, my advice to all Type 1 diabetics is to eliminate all dairy products[1]from their diet completely for six months. At the end of six months, for 24 hours eat a lot of dairy, and see how it makes you feel. If you notice a problem after the reintroduction of dairy products, then you would be advised to avoid them for the rest of your life. Additionally, it would be appropriate to be tested for a milk allergy with the Alcat food allergy test.

Discussion: Type I diabetes is not curable but the amount of insulin necessary to inject can be greatly reduced with the addition of a sound medical nutrition program. If you are a Type-1 Insulin-Dependent, diabetic, then you are in the habit of measuring your blood sugars regularly and adjusting your insulin doses appropriately. When you start the program outlined in this book just keep doing that and as your sugars come down which they invariably will, simply adjust your insulin dosages down as well.

Type II diabetes is a different story. In the 1950s a medical doctor named Mertz discovered that he could make laboratory rats develop type II diabetes or not, by giving or withholding the trace mineral chromium from their diets. Among other things, chromium is necessary for the body to create and to open up “sugar doors” which allow sugar to enter the cell. Other trace minerals, vanadium, magnesium, zinc, and selenium are also necessary for the optimal metabolism of blood sugar.

My Rx: In addition to the 90 EN:

•      Sweet-Eze*: One bottle per 75 pounds per month, taken in divided doses at the same times every day.

•      Glucogenics*: One bottle per 75 pounds per month, taken in divided doses at the same times every day.

*Take either the Sweet-Eze or the Glucogenics – you don’t need both.

  • Projoba Omega: One bottle per 100 pounds per month, taken in divided doses with meals. The Omega-3 essential fatty acids in this product help the body to transport sugar into the interior of the cells more efficiently.
